Guest View: The Time is now: Every child needs a high school diploma

In the February 9, 2012 Standard Times Rep. Cabral wrote a guest editorial.

“We also know that when students don’t walk away from their education, more of them walk the stage to get their diploma. When students are not allowed to drop out, they do better. So tonight, I am proposing that every state, every state, requires that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn 18.”

These were President Obama’s words in his State of the Union address on Jan.y 24. With those words, he joined those of us who have long advocated updating our state’s laws governing mandatory school age to reflect the economy young people face today and will continue to face in the years to come.

Guest View: Take steps against bullying with No Name Calling Day

In the January 25, 2012 Standard Times Rep. Cabral wrote a guest editorial.

Today, Jan. 25, is “No Name Calling Day” in Massachusetts, a time to stand against bullying and to increase awareness of the harm bullying causes to so many young people. I encourage New Bedford students, parents and teachers to get involved in this fight: Participate in No Name Calling Day today by taking a pledge against bullying and wearing black, a symbol of our commitment to “black out bullying.”

Guest View: Open Government: Reform the Public Records Law

In the January 4, 2012 Standard Times Rep. Cabral wrote a guest editorial.

The Standard-Times’ recent editorial urging changes in the state’s public records law in light of recent revelations about the Romney administration’s missing emails is exactly right: Our law needs updating.

How does the Massachusetts Public Records law deal with electronic records? Documents stored on computer disks or drives? Information stored on web sites or in the “cloud”? There is no mention of any of these, because the law was written before any of these technologies existed.
